Feelin' Good with Marie: a Helen Keller pep talk, a farewell to the shoes-off house, a glucose monitor on my arm, and the day I drove to the ocean specifically to scream.
HELLO friends!!! 👋
Big week over here. We said goodbye to a house, I stuck a sensor in my arm, and I made a loud noise at Ocean Beach... plus some other random things
Let’s gooo!!!
Quote of the Week
“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.”
- Helen Keller
Avoiding danger isn’t actually safer. We just FEEL safer. The risk of playing it safe only shows up years later...
Daring adventure or nothing. Given the week we just had, I think we’ve chosen. 🩷
The plaque on the wall in texas
Backstory on the Lombardi post from Monday:
I was in Texas touring packaging manufacturers and in one of the offices, there it was on the wall. “What It Takes To Be Number One.”
I stood there and read the whole thing while everyone waited for me. Like a full minute of silence. Someone definitely thought I was having a moment. I was!!!
“Winning is a habit, and unfortunately, so is losing” The HABIT part. You don’t decide to win once. You decide it every boring weekday.
Also there’s something perfect about finding a locker-room speech hanging in a cardboard box company. The people making cartons in Texas are locked in. Be like them.
Goodbye, shoes-off house
Last issue I told you we were moving into the new Marina HQ. This week was the other half: actually saying goodbye to Alamo Square.
This is the house where we pivoted the company. Where events happened basically weekly, which means hundreds of strangers-turned-friends came through, and because it was a shoes-off house, the entryway regularly looked like a shoe store exploded.
There were tears in that house. There was, one time, a small amount of blood. There was definitely sweat.
Moving day itself was brutal in the way only moving is: you don’t realize how much life accumulated until it’s in boxes. I found things from the pivot era that felt like artifacts from a different company. Because they kind of were.
Okay. Enough crying. Marina era. 🌉
Dexcom week one
I put on my first Dexcom (a continuous glucose monitor that sends my levels to my phone in real time, day and night)
Glucose is the fuel your body runs on, and it’s one of the most direct signals we have for energy, focus, and long-term metabolic health. I want to see what my meals, workouts, and sleep ACTUALLY do.
I check the app constantly. CONSTANTLY. It’s been days and I’ve already looked at my phone after eating everytime.
Back soon with insights..
Milestone unlocked: brand nails
A TikTok creator painted her nails to match GloGlo.
I don’t know what business milestone this technically is. But I know it means something, because nobody has ever painted their nails to match a brand they feel neutral about.
You cannot fake nail-level love.
Adding it to the list of signs we’re doing something right, right next to “USPS visits five times a week”
The ocean beach scream
Okay so. This one requires context.
There wasn’t a crisis. Nothing was wrong. It had just been A Lot of weeks in a row with the move, travel, and launches, and I read somewhere that a proper scream is genuinely good for you.
A full-capacity, empty-the-tank scream.
So Wednesday I got in the car, drove to Ocean Beach, walked to the water, and let it rip.
Findings:
Nobody called the cops
One dog looked at me with what I choose to interpret as respect
It works.
Then I got a coffee and went back to my meetings like a completely normal person, which might be the best part of the whole thing.
And that’s the week!!
Say goodbye to something that mattered, read whatever’s hanging on the wall, and if it all gets to be A Lot, the beach is right there and it can’t hear you over the waves anyway.
Send me PROOF if you actually go scream.
Until next time: daring adventure or nothing 🫡
